NBC Action Weather Blog

The Week Ahead...Goodbye!

Watch NBC Action News HD from 8-9 a.m. and at 5 & 10 p.m. as we track our next storm!

Good Sunday bloggers!  Today is a tough day because it is my last day at KSHB.  I can safely say that I learned more working with Gary, Brett, and Jeff than any other weather team in my career.  When I arrived 3 years ago I had doubts that the weather pattern could actually cycle and be used to predict long range.  In just my first year I quickly realized that there was something to this, especially since my first year had 'the storm' that cycled I believe every 42-46 days.  This storm arrived around November 30, repeated when my daughter was born in January of 2007, and then came back again in the Spring and even early Summer!  I look forward to sharing the LRC with a new group of viewers.  There will be doubts, as we've learned here, without questions being asked though, some of the answers would never be discovered.  Hopefully everyone will venture up to WISN.com and keep me updated on the happenings around Kansas City in the years ahead!

Below is a picture from last December 23 when I was in Milwaukee.  I think the snow depth was around 18"!

Now onto the weather.  For today we will see periods of clouds once again.  There have been a few sprinkles or brief showers mainly east of the state line this morning.  Rain chances today are less than 20%, so don't cancel any outdoor plans.  And odds are if you head to Arrowhead to tailgate, you will stay dry.  Temperatures for today should be very mild with low 60s in many spots.

Monday will likely be our last mild day for a little while as a punch of colder air will arrive.  Right now there should be some rain showers around later Monday and there is a chance that some snow mixes in on Tuesday.  At this moment the storm track is not ideal for snow in Kansas City.  In fact, the 12Z NAM does not bring a changeover or mix into the metro until somewhere around Noon to 6 p.m.  Notice how close the possible snow is in northeast Kansas.  A little shift and we could see enough snow to stick.  The track of this storm is key and something we will focus in on NBC Action News today at 5 p.m. and after NFL Football.

Below is the 12Z NAM forecast for Tuesday afternoon.  The blue line represents the 850mb 0C line.  This map indicates we could see some snow on Tuesday.

After the rain/snow on Tuesday, the focus will shift to an area of cold air that should drift in late Wednesday into Thursday.  Below is the surface map from the 12Z NAM for late Wednesday.  This area of cold air will likely keep highs around 40ish on Thanksgiving.

That's it for today unless the afternoon/evening data has some changes.  It has been a pleasure writing blogs each week that help people plan there lives and maybe learn something along the way.

Jeremy

Best to you Jeremy!

Remember that if the snow really gets to you, you can always come for a visit, or better yet get go one step further in LRC land and develop a way to push the snow storms south and onto the KC metro area. I am sure Gary would also appreciate this one.
Thanks again for your dedication and helping us learn more.

Jeremy,

In light of your exodus, I feel it wise to share and remind you of some key points in communicating the LRC to your new audience and fellow meteorologists.  This is a top-ten [tongue & cheek}list. These are things to say or do.

10.  “Don’t you see it?”
9.  “Watch along with us through the upcoming months”
8.  “We will discuss it more in depth near the Summer time when things slow down”
7.  “What happens one time around does not mean it will happen again the same way at the surface”
6.  Reference other meteorologists in the US using the theory.
5.  Some have taken the approach of making the theory their own.  Rename it the NRC.
4.  One of your competitors says the word “pattern”.  They must be using the NRC!
3.  “It’s so obvious!”
2.  Find a blogger{s} to argue your points when you are too busy to write.
1.  Rebrand “100% sunshine” to “100% LRC”

All joking aside – enjoy the ride.  Most importantly….have fun.  I suspect it is not goodbye as likely you will see some of us pop up in your new destination’s blog.

Won’t that be fun?

As it's said for about the zillionth time, good luck, we'll miss you a lot.  Jeff Penner's real smart, and his forecasts are just as good, but it won't be quite the same seeing him all the time, instead.  =/

I know Jeff is getting a great job, but I just love the morning team on KSHB and hate the thought of him leaving as much as I hate to see you go, Jeremy. I loved that Jeff did the Bike For MS, and I think his "Workers Wanted' segments are such a valuable service at a critical time. I've said before that I never much liked local news until we moved here and I jumped channels until I landed on KSHB. Jeff Vaughn has national network written all over him, a Brian-Williams kind of guy, IMHO. Seriously, Christa had better return after she has that baby!  I have coffee with those people every morning before the sun is up.

A meloncholy mood is never fun, hopefully this will cheer you all up!

A young man named John received a parrot as a gift.

The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary.   Every word out of the bird's' mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity.

John Tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying
only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to "clean up" the bird's vocabulary.

Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even ruder. John, in desperation, threw up his hands, grabbed the bird and put him In the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep, was heard for over a minute.

Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms And said "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions.
I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable  behavior."

John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude.    As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, when the bird continued,  "May I ask what the turkey did?"

If the NAM wins out....this storm takes a great track to produce snow in parts of the metro.

There is just not much cold air(once again) to work with in this scenario. Im beginning to wonder if this will indeed become a trend in this years LRC?

This could really hamper seasonal snow totals if cold air remains this tough to come by....

Adam - these storm tracks are very good for snow..remember, cold air this time of year is difficult anyway.  Also, these storms are just ahead of the colder air that will be building and coming in the upcoming days as shown in the latest lrcweather.com blog.
