NBC Action Weather Blog

Frigid Thursday Morning!

Good morning bloggers,

Low temperatures ranged from 8º below zero at Manhattan, KS to 7º above zero in Sedalia, MO this morning.  Take a look at the visible satellite picture taken yesterday afternoon.  The sky was clear from Kansas City north and west through the plains revealing the snow pack.  And,  you can clearly see the sharp cut off line where there was no snow at all.

Yesterday, I was on WPTV-TV in West Palm Beach during their 5 PM newscast.  It was their lead story as they were having record heat.  I was standing outside and experiencing our -10º wind chills while it was 90º there.  There was literally a 100º difference. After four minutes outside my fingers hurt and I went back inside.  I experienced what it is like to work outside and for less than five minutes.  So, for all of you that have to work outside in this weather we appreciate you.

It will be a sunny day with a westerly breeze. Speaking of Breezy, she just fetched the paper and I appreciate it.  Yes, I still get the Kansas City Star.  I enjoy spending a few minutes reading the newspaper.  I know you can get so many things online, just like this blog, but I still like relaxing and enjoy reading the paper.

The weather pattern is cycling and our next big storm system is likely another 10 days away at least.  There may be a chance early next week of something smaller, but it just doesn't seem to be lining up.  Go to www.LRCWeather.com and click on the blog over there for more on what likely is ahead of us.

Have a great Thursday!  I will be working on some special weather graphics today to describe this weather pattern.  I will look ahead to Christmas week on the air tonight at 5, 6, and 10 PM on NBC Action News in HD!

Gary

That is a really cool satellite photo...lets hope it can look something similar in a few weeks so we can have a White Christmas.

Looks like they may have found a cause for that crazy spiral light that was shown on your NBC Nightly News last night:

Hey Gary, when you get a chance and you get time, can you make a link or add a page to the NBC Action news site that can give sone kind of discription of all the weather jargon you guys use? I am a big weather lover, but still just an amature. It would be great if some of us would have a point of reference to all the wonderful charts and grafs you put up to better understand them. I love to follow the weather and read the blog all the time but don't post often. Thank you for all of your hard work that you do on the blog. For some of us during the work day, this is the only good way to keep up with weather. It must be hard to keep up the blog and do your normal work load as well.

--------------

We need to put something like this together for you. And, I really should spend a bit more time explaining some of the terms and maps.  Thank you for participating and have a great day.

I thought about all those people without power last night, I sure hope it is back on and no one had to suffer all night without heat. How many cold snaps like this one do you expect we will have this winter??? I was trying to remember if that was part of your winter forecast but could not recall. Have a great day weather team and bloggers!

Ohhh  I think I would like to live in west palm beach, I love the 90s...of course 100s would be better but I could put up with the 90s!  Today was the first time in a very long time I didn't go on a hike with Windy, she went outside, came back in and disappeared!  She didn't want to go either and spent the morning buried under the covers......wish I could do that!  2 degrees in Paola at 5am, not fit for man (old woman) or beast!  STill thankful for no measurable snow in Paola ;)!

Too bad some of these smaller systems are not lining up for us because you know the big storms are going to miss us. If we could just get some smaller ones to hit it would take some pressure off when the big ones come through. Now we are going to be hypeing the big storm before xmas all our eggs are kinda in that basket it appears.

Good morning Gary and to all in the Kansas City metro.

It's a whopping -1 outside my door this morning here in Weiser.   It's been this way for that last four days or so..   Our local river is frozen over and there's ice flows in the Snake River as it winds its way along the Idaho / Oregon border.

Stay warm back there and have a great day.  Hopefully, we will get some snow, they are forecasting some over the next five days or so.

Hmmm.  I completely forgot about the early October storm; I was calling this past one the Oct. 21st blast.  I guess, now when I think about it, we would have been seeing the next storm on models by now (Oct. 29th).  The neat thing (at least to me!!) is that the calendars are in sync this month so we don't have to keep doing calendar math to figure out the next storm, i.e. the 1st storm was on the 8-10 (same as October) and so the next two can be expected around the 21st and 29th.  Convenient!!  I know, not exact, but close enough for this month.
The seasonal shift still brings me hope for the next two storms to just slam us, so here's wishing for a white Christmas!!

Being outside isn't so bad as long as you have warm outdoor apperal. I look like the Michelin tire man when I go out... Carhart Bib Coverall, Carhart Coat, Full face mask with another hat on top, and gloves that have the flip-flop mitten tops so I can still use my fingers and then tuck them back in the mitten. The glove/mitten hybrid is the best for winter chores!

Don't get me wrong, I really find doing chores harder in winter and they take longer when it is zero since nothing ever works right like latches, getting the tractor started, and carrying water buckets because the hoses are frozen.

And my little dog won't do his business in one trip either. Got to let him out before I go do chores and then again when I come back in. Crazy dog!!

Yeah, I said the blog needed to be monitored. All blogs do. Nothing personal or all that different about this one. You can preach about getting along and ignoring posts you don't like, but that never ever works. Someone will always throw a stinkbomb and invariably, people will react to it.

I monitor the blog as much as I possibly can. I will delete the political commentary.   There wasn't anything that badly stated, but we don't need it in this weather blog.

Thanks, and what William said was not that bad at all.  But, since it was stirring up political views it was best to delete it.

I know we had some big rains at the end of October ... someone mentioned above Oct. 29, meaning Dec. 29 is possibly a winter version of that moisture.  Is the LRC going EXACTLY every 60 days?  I have to fly out of KCI that day, but first I have to GET there and if the weather is bad, don't know if that will happen.  We're having a memorial service for my mother in KY and I already bought my ticket so I have to be there!  Aargh!

Hello everyone: Just got back from PLOWS (Profiling of Winter Storms)  IOP 10 in Clinton, IA.  Had blizzard like conditions driving home yesterday back to Columbia, Mo. Never experienced blizzard like conditions before! It was INTENSE!!!   Had a lot of fun launching wx balloons every 2 hrs.  Gary they got about 7 inches or so in Clinton, IA and much more to the west in Des Moines.  One of my friends that lives there is snowed in but doing good.

When do you think the next storm will be forming? Around what time frame anything before the 21st?

What is a good mb level to look at for beginning cyclonegenisis?

These are just some questions I have for you and did you ever get my e-mail about you featured in UCAR?

Laura, my son flies in the 22nd and goes back the 27th. I am not liking any idea of a storm around then either. Two years ago his flight from Dallas to here was delayed 4 hours and he didn't have a cell, the school doesn't allow them. Needless to say him being 16 did nothing to assuage my fears but Phil drove up there in his SUV and we got home safe and sound.

I do not believe the LRC can have an exact day, perhaps a time frame but not down to the day and hour. You also do not have to drive. There is the KCI Shuttle or a cab. It will cost you money but I know a VERY reliable guy driving a cab right now that can get you there.

Like Tina says, don't worry two weeks out.
