Snow Ending & Cold Blast...Updated

Good evening bloggers,

Temperatures have crashed from 34º around noon into the teens this evening. The sky may briefly clear around this storm allowing for a combination of radiational cooling with the cold blast, but it will be short lived as clouds and warmer air wrap around the storm system.  It will likely drop into the single digits between now and midnight.

I will add more thoughts in a little while, after the newscasts, which I am about to do the 5 PM weathercast right now to show these developments.

And, now I am getting some dinner.  We will look at the temperature drop in just a little while.

O.K.  Here is a quick update. It has already dropped to 12 degrees as of 8 PM at KCI Airport.  The sky is just now clearing and we have a wedge of clear skies around the main upper low.  This will allow the temperatures to drop to near zero before the bands of clouds move back in.  As this vigorous upper low tracks into northern Missouri early in the morning we will get a surge of clouds rapidly moving in with a good chance of snow showers during the morning. On Tuesday, we will go over the details of these developments, and I will go back and look at our eight winter storms.  This was Winter Storm Hoss.

I know our area got missed, but check out this map:

Basically the entire United States east of the Mississippi and north of the Mason Dixon line is going to get pounded with massive snow. There's gotta be a 1/3 of the USA with some type of winter weather alert right now.

The front has made its way to Sedalia.  I just stepped outside and got pelted by the blowing snow.  The wind is howling and the snow is blowing. Brrr.  I'm beginning to think we must of really ticked Mother Nature off and she's taking her anger out on us.  Of couse I know I shouldn't complain, it could be worse we could live in DC..although joining in that massive snow ball fight would've been fun.

"Even if the late December storms repeats in a similar fashion for KC and we double our average snowfall total, if places to our South(i.e. Amarillo, OK City, Fort Smith) get more snow than we do, does that mean we were in the perfect spot snow?  Are we having our 1 in 50 winter or is this just a part of someone else's  1 in 50 or 60 or 70 winter?  I know I will be ridiculed by the anti-snow crowd, but when do we get our own special winter?  If you take away the Christmas (eve) snow, this winter has not been that extraordinary."

Weatherjaded, none of those cities you listed have more total snowfall than KC to date.

Dec. 8th-9th, 3-4 inches of snow with 35 mph winds following the event, causing ground blizzard conditions. (Mainly the Northland)

X-mas Blizzard, 6-10 inches of snow, followed by 3 days of 1-2 inch snows, 4-6 ft. drifts throughout the city.

Dec. 29th through Jan. 4th, two 1-3 inch snows, very cold temps.

Jan. 6th and 7th or 8th, 4-6 inches throught out the metro followed by 40+ mph winds for about a day and a half. With existing snow on the ground along with the newly falling snow, drifting was once again extreme throughout the city. Many country roads were closed for a period of time.

Feb. 5th, 1-2 inches of wet snow for most, but some were lucky (or unlucky) and recorded 7-11 inches.

Today, 1-2 inches from last night into today, followed by arctic air that created flash freezing, wrecks all over the place.

These are just some of the minor events that have occurred this winter. Don't forget the 7 day stretch of fog, throw in extreme cold for long periods, minor dustings of snow that coated area roads, and maybe 13 hrs of total sunshine.

Your right, just another normal winter here in KC........... to be continued

Juba you REALLY need to retype that! This is when using spell check can save a lot of headaches. You didn't mean anything about blacks thinking with bad grammar but now do you see why some of us uphold spelling?

Oh dear, really, I do not understand what you are insinuating. Word said all my grammar was correct as well as my typing. Sometimes words may look to be different then what they actually are. I also don’t understand what you mean about this: “You didn't mean anything about blacks thinking with bad grammar but now do you see why some of us uphold spelling?” What does that mean, the sentence starts with one meaning I thought it could be, but then ends with another.  Please elaborate!

Methinks that somebody could use a few deep breaths, and I think you might find this interesting…I have a friend that speaks Spanish and I asked them what bobo meant because an old teacher of mine used to call their pastor bobo, not knowing what it meant. (They later told her, and she stopped calling him bobo) In a very, loose manner, it can be defined as this: Understanding short, clumsy. Very candid. In the old Spanish drama, a character that caused laughter.  Though that is very loose, and when I asked the person they freaked out and said it was an insult worse than any we have in America.

Please don't start requiring credit cards for blog registration. I try to keep as little information on the web as I can!   I do blog and comment under an anonymous name, but there is nothing that I would say as the SKC Observer that I would not say under my own name.  I do it to protect my privacy and for safety, that is all.  I really enjoy coming on here and reading other people's stuff, and adding my own two cents worth, usually just reporting, as I am still pretty much a beginner on models and such.

Now on to the weather...

Boy did we crash and burn temp wise?  Check this out:

Temperatures--KCI observations
0600--32 w/wind SSE at 6 mph                         1500--20
0900--32 with calm winds                                 1600--20
1200--32 w/wind NNW at 12 mph                      1700--18
1300--27                                                         1800--17
1400--23                                                    Since wind shift, winds NNW 15-20 mph

Spring seems a long way away when a cold front can come through and do that!

Mike,
Thanks for the recap.  I certainly may have understated our weather.  But both, Amarillo and OK City have both had record single day snowfalls this winter.  We don't.  So I do not know top to bottom that their weather has been more significant than ours.  But, record 24 hour totals is very significant, something that KC cannot boast.  But, which of the events that you mentioned except the Christmas snowfall and the week with extreme cold temps, would you say does not happen in a average year?  Don't get me wrong, I have been excited with this years wintry weather.  And clearly this has not been an average year when you total all of the events that you pointed out.  But, if the last week of Februrary does not repeat the last week of December then the official KC snowfall total goes down as an above average snowfall season, with average temps, and 0 ice storms.

Thank you for spending the time to comment.

mowermike, nice post. I love the stats.

Personally I rank a rough winter by how much of a headache I get driving around, really this year has not been too bad on my headache scale.

Snow total wise, I don't know what we're looking at for KC, but it has to be significantly higher than the previous two winters (maybe higher even if combined!)

The storms this year, although higher in snow totals than normal, appear to have been significantly less than 2008 and 2007. Thankfully I can handle the bitter cold.

However, when you mention 13 hours of sunshine, that sends shivers down my spine, I like my Winter, I don't mind my snow, but please (anyone!!!) give me cold crisp days with some sunshine!!!! :)

I feel lucky to be involved in a Winter season that may not repeat for another 20 odd years.

Hwy. 69 past Louisburg has some black ice and lots of blowing snow. My 4x4 Dually slipped around a few times and I was going about 50 MPH! Should drove the All Wheel Drive car instead, but I gotta have heated seats. Ha!

Snow is starting to drift around the barns too. My Poor little rooster named Rock Star must have got kicked out of the coop today. He was standing by the door on one leg in the snow. Boy was he glad to see me; I picked him up and carried him back in the coop. He's the best rooster I've ever had. Glad I found him before the coyotes.

Weatherjaded..not to be picky, but KC did break a single day snow storm record this Winter.  Also with your comment - " But, if the last week of Februrary does not repeat the last week of December then the official KC snowfall total goes down as an above average snowfall season, with average temps, and 0 ice storms. "

Um.  KMCI averages about 17 inches of snow through the end of March.  As of now, they have recorded about 25 inches.  That is quite a bit above normal with still nearly two months of snow possible.

Hippygoth - 2006-2007 winter had about 10 inches of snow.  2007-2008 had about 24 inches.  Based on KMCI.

Gary, although this is in fantansy land, have you looked at the 18z gfs for the 24th? 500 mb pattern is greatly resembling Christmas storm... Perhaps we finally get another huge storm? LRC would suggest so!

---------------------

Yes,  I saw it, but it could end up falling somewhere between February 22nd and March 5th. There are two storm systems that have the potential to create that same set up.

I appreciate the recap of the winter here so far.  I am not sure what one would classify as a typical Missouri winter.  In my 33 years, I've seen some rough winters and I've seen my share of snow.  3 or 4 years ago, here in Sedalia we had that record breaking 16 inch snow around Dec. 1 then in the middle of January that year we had the ice storm which closed schools here for a week.  Yes, those two events were extreme, but in between, we had periods of sun and above freezing temps to get us through.  To me, it just seems that the cold, snow and lack of sunshine has been on going since Dec.  I probably wouldn't be complaining so bad if perhaps we would've gotten 20 hours of sunshine instead!!!  The lack of sunshine does tend to dampen people's spirits, I know I tend to get "grouchy" after a long period of cold and snow.   Right now, all I am praying for is some sunshine to help break up this dark drafty period we are in.

Hey Matt, ya know, OKC and Amarillo may not be finished. We need that southern jet to get further north, these large rain and snow events have pounded Oklahoma and Arkansas over the past 6-8 weeks.

I have been in the snow business a long time, I bet I can add up the previous 3 years of worked snow events, and I won't even come close to the amount of money we turned in that 28 day stretch in  mid to late Dec. through the first 10 days of Jan. We honestly had to haul snow off of properties with our dump trucks and loaders. Some of our commercial loading docks had 6 ft. drifts. I have never  seen that before. That is why I think this winter will be one to remeber, just like Gary thought it might. I do understand your thoughts as well.

I think a late month or early March blizzard is likely here in the metro.

That's right MG, I made a prediction. Save this one, you might be able to call me out on it later. I give it a 75% shot. Look at this pattern, one would think the chances are much higher with this year's LRC.

By the way, the recent storm was related to winter storm Axel from about 60 days ago, right?  We had our first real snow accums. in the metro, followed by some very cold temps. ( Dec 8th or 9th) That seems to be a cycle, WOW AGAIN!!!

Gotta Go, Big KU at Texas tonight, I think KU is due for a loss. I hope not#!

February 24, March 1-5, and March 14-17, March 20-25, will be storms in the area. Nothing scientific, just a guess.  There is the LRC then there is a pattern that repeats every  so often from year to year or skips a year or 2. Hey, why not, everyone else throws their guesses around.   I will  try the dartboard.

I'm not calling out everyone who made a bad prediction. I just took note of the one prediction that sounded the surest and most arrogant -- in spite of what Gary was saying. It irked me, and I made a mental note to call him out on it.

I don't take anyone's predictions seriously, because predictions aren't forecasts. Macnkc has the right idea. Get a dartboard.
