I saw a projected path of that hurricane in the Gulf tracking northwest over Texas by Wednesday. What impact would this have in pulling Gulf moisture up through Texas, OK, KS and Missouri?

the funny thing about the far reaches of hurricanes is...that if you arent being directly affected by a storm, but are in relatively close proximity, it causes a sinking motion in the atmosphere and scours out the clouds. this would likely lead to heating here...but i havent had many opportunities to study the effects of tropical disturbances in this local area yet.

it always amazed me how sunny it was right before we got hurricanes/strong TS's in fla. its never completely sunny in florida in the summertime unless if theres a storm coming.

It looks warm. Highs should be around 90...unless some rain is around the area. You are brave to move in July...especially if you don't have movers!

It is very oppressive out there I hope everyone stays cool and stays inside,its a nice day for some iced tea or lemonade. This also marks 3 90 degree days for the contest. Have a good day everyone.

We will be in the 90s on Monday...after that it will likely be in the 80s for a couple of days. Then maybe back to the low 90s.

Ahhh, this feels just like Phoenix or Palm Springs, both considered home to me. The oven like heat when you walk outside, the tease of a breeze..... The dogs are not impressed, I need to get some water on my yard, but otherwise, this is kind of nice, makes me feel like I'm back in the southwest. The 80's are quite comfy and I will be ready for them when I go back to work.

The one plus to this hot, dry heat is the white clover is dying and drying up in the yard and pasture. The wet Cool Spring allowed the obnoxious stuff to grow and spread everywhere. I have never seen such a bumper crop of white clover!!!

In case you didn't know, white clover makes horses salivate a lot and it comes gushing out of their mouth like water comes out of a faucet.... of course they always do it when you are standing right next too or under their head. I've got many green slimed blouses. :)

What are your thoughts about gulf moisture being drawn to our area by the hurricane as it heads over western TExas?

A lot will depend on the exact path and strength of the storm. The 700mb RH panels from the latest NAM take the storm over SW Texas but also shows a decent flow of moisture into the Midwest off the Gulf of Mexico. This would likely in turn keep the juicey dew points in the 70s around. The front that comes by us on Tuesday will likely stall somewhere near KC and then retreat back to the north. So a couple of days in the 80s are possible before 90s return to the region.

The moisture thing will be interesting especially with a possible NW flow ahead. The 18Z GFS put a lot of rain chances in...at the moment I just stuck with Tuesday-Thursday. But Friday-Sunday may have to be added if the trend continues.

KCI was 95...unless they hit 96 between and 4 & 5 p.m. The official highs for today will come in around 7 p.m.

I was at Lake Olathe today at Kill Creek Park and the temp reading in my car hit 100 on the way there but it mostly remained at the 99 mark.

your blog title update is misleading, since the official high was only 95. but it is interesting that it reached 100 in olathe. i was expecting some 98 or so, but 100 is hot!

dont hold your breath scott. there will be more. just look back to august last year. the hottest temp at kci last july was only 93. we have beaten that already, so we could be in for a long stretch of heat...

I don't think it is misleading at all...just a good tease. In my opinion it wasn't misleading since I state that it was in Olathe right away. Just thought people might find it interesting that one location in the metro has officially reached 100 this season.

With the amount of moisture in the air and the slow movement of the front I would think some areas will see over 1"...maybe 2". But like most rain events there will be locations that miss out too. Right now the best bet for the totals of 1" or more would be near and north of I-70.

I am not sold on the heat yet...sure, today it was hot...tomorrow will be hot, but perhaps that is it this week. Looking at the SREF, the GFS MOS, and the latest GFS, I think Tues will be below 90 and Wed will be too.

That leaves Thurs/Fri....with the injection of moisture and a forming ridge in OK, I think we are on the north side allowing for some moisture to ride over the ridge into our neck of the woods.

Looking at the 700mb, it seems to want to make it overcast or cloudy on Thurs. That would keep the temps down. Friday looks more partly cloudy, but with precip in the area...so, that could go either way.

All in all, maybe two hot days and an unusual backdoor front. Mixed with the tropical moisture, and temps should stay largely in check..

Maybe over 90 today, Mon and maybe Friday? I haven't really looked at Sat yet...maybe...3-4 days over 90 in late July in KC? I will take it!

It wont feel like Spring, but far better than what is possible here in Summer on average.

You mentioned all the models...but what about the weather team's forecast regarding the cool down:) I think Gary started talking about this last week. I had Tuesday-Thursday in the 80s. I think one of those days could be 82ish...but rain/clouds would need to hang around.
