North of Leavenworth . 53 inches of snow and still a few flurries, this I can live with, the roads seem to be a bit slick but after driving home late last night and dealing with ice on my windshield, it certainly could have been worse. My thoughts go out to all of those traveling home on this first winter event of the season...please slow down, slick spots can lurk almost anywhere. I will leave the snow creation to someone more willing to endure the cold than I am...LOL

In Leavenworth snow is on the tree branches, and grass is peeking through the snow on the ground. There's just something about the first snowfall of the season that is extra special. The snow has quit falling in my area here. Happy "winter" to everyone!!! Edna

Hi Chris,
I measured in several places. First was on top of my steel smoker, where I recorded 1.75". I then measured on my wooden deck, where I recorded 2". I also measured on my hot tub cover where it ranged from 1.75" to 2.00". All of these surfaces are very hard with no leaves. I also measured in the grass. I recorded anywhere from 1.5" to 2.0" of snow with an additional 1 to 2" of grass and leaves. Any hard ground surfaces, such as my brick patio, gravel driveway and concrete sidewalk had no more than a dusting to 1/2" of slushy snow cover(I am assuming this is due to residual ground warmth bleeding thru these surfaces and melting most of the snow as my thermometer is currently reading 29.5 degrees fahrenheit.

Chris and Flake, this begs the question...what is the "official" way to measure a snowfall? If you go out and put a ruler in the ground, it will sink down below the snow's surface and you won't get an accurate reading. If you measure a hard surface, then you might have some drifting that could skew the numbers a bit. Any thoughts by anyone on how a snowfall is officially calculated and what type of surface the snow is measured upon?

Oh I am so excited, I get to drive my son to the airport in the snowy weather. I wonder what it will be like this afternoon when we head out? I wonder if anything is going to delay his flight from KCI to Dallas? I don't mind if he stays here but school won't like it. Oh , it is just so thrilling to get that first drive in snowy weather. How wonderful that as the days wear on it will be even more fun because there will be more snow, and maybe some ice to drive in! The best part is, it's cold out too!

We drove home from Sioux Falls, South Dakota yesterday. We hit the snow about 30 minutes south of there and had a mix of snow, rain, and sleet all the way through Iowa and Missouri. The worst part was having to stop at every rest area, because my puppy was sick. :( He is a 3 month old Yorkie and did not want to get out in the cold and wet! Here at Altona (between Ballard and Adrian) we have .5 inches. Can't wait to hear the weather team's thoughts on the systems coming through Wednesday and Saturday! I am keeping my fingers crossed for a snow day! :P

Hi NorthlandKB,
I have read several documents detailing how to "officially" measure snowfall and they all boil down to pretty much the same thing. You must have a level surface free of any obstructions(trees, buildings, fences, etc.), preferrably sheltered from the wind to avoid measuring drifts. Take several readings at least a few feet apart and take the average. The composition of the surface does not really matter as long as you measure only the snow depth and not the depth of grass or leaves below the snow. Hope this helps.

I don't think it will be like this morning. But if there is a wet spot or two from melting snow today it could refreeze tonight. That would probably be on sidewalks or driveways. Although we continue to hear of slide offs occurring on the scanners.

Good chilly/breezy morning to you sir!! Currently sitting at around 30 degrees this morning with a fairly stiff NW breeze-not too bad at all really!! Actually feels very invigorating outside this morning!!

Wound up with just a bit over a dusting here in SW Lawrence-the Grass was quasi covered but the pavement never really got snow on it. I will take it for a November snow-it was awesome!!!

I think Wednesday will be fun to watch-the 6Z GFS (I think??) is trying to develop some energy out in the 4 corners region and tries to kick it out after the cold front gets through here-it is not real strong but I think it is there. If my memory is serving me correctly, we did have a similar situation to this in early October where a front came down and then had a small vort swing through after the front passed from the SW. The 0Z Euro does not really show this so the GFS maybe an outlier and even on the GFS it is not much but maybe just enough to kick off a bit of snow Wednesday afternoon. One thing that does look fairly certain: it is going to get cold Wednesday afternoon!!! The Euro also is showing some pretty strong cold shots over the next 10 days with some pretty good warm ups in between. Just like we have seen all Fall-up and down-very volitale!!

I do think this weekend showed us that even in this NW flow sub pattern we can have our shots and now I think we are beginning to see some energy from the SW breaking through-if I am seeing things even remotely correct, we are about to go into some interesting weather!!!!
