Get Smarted again!!! LOL!! Man-I am hitting it at night and in the morning!!!! I can't keep up LOL!!! I missed again by that much....

Fascinating watching things this morning on satelite and the surface charts-just awesome!! i think on the water vapor imagery you can see the secomnd wave trying to organize on the borders of New Mexico, Texas, and the Oklahoma Panhandle.

I didn't put this in the previous blog and I usually don't do this as any time I try to make a guess on snow or rain I wind up with about a dozen eggs on my face but I'll give it a roll!!

I am thinking trace to two inches for Lawrence. That cold air is rushing down like a bowling ball and with that farily strong high pressure area pushing south I think this second wave may dive into Texas a bit and then move out NE-kind of a Texas Hooker track-that is not a good snow track for Lawrence as we are a bit too far west.

Whatever the case, this is/has been great to track and follow-just awesome!!

Good morning to you and the rest of the weather team! What an interesting night last night, It felt more like spring outside then it did late fall. According to my weather station we only received .08 today and looking at the history on it http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=KKSKANSA9
Looks like the winds switched around to the North here in KCK around 1:20 am and we have been dropping ever since then. Currently sitting at 32.2 with a NW wind at 10 MPH gusting to 13…nice chilly morning, and finally we are cold enough for some snow! Here is hoping for more than a dusting in KCK today!

It is going to be a very interesting day. There is just now a sign of this storm coming together, but the band of snow will be thin. It just happens to be targeting our local area. We should know more very soon.

Yuck, Looks like La Cygne is in the 2-3 inch snow band; and I hope no more than that. Hubby can fire up the snow blower now, he gets excited about using another "man" toy! I just assume it stays in the machine shed and collects dust. :)

Ok, being a teacher, I am only concerned with when is our next snow day going to come? I was thinking it would be Dec 9 or 10th based upon earlier blogs, but it looks like are not going to lose any days this week. Next week we have finals - is it too early to call for next week?

Thanks for reminding me. I will wear it. Did you know that I got that outfit in 1992. It is a bit dated and maybe later on in the season I will have a new snow vest.

It should snow at least an inch down your way. Let's see where the band sets up.

It certainly is possible. The big problem with todays situation is the wind. If it snows more than one inch then the roads will be all slick and hazardous by the time school gets out. We will know a lot more by around 11 AM. Watch NBC Action News at 11 AM and we will update the blog by around that time as well.

Hey penguin...I think you are right on that one...it's the fear of being sued. Buses also have to be careful because they are carrying precious cargo. With the wind blowing, it will be more hazardous than just a 3 inch snow fall with no wind.

It's better to be safe and sorry. When I taught in Springfield they didn't release us early for the first day of the ice storm last year, because they didn't think it would get as bad as it did. You never know with the weather!

I'm actually a little excited about the snow, but only because I am off today and dont have to go anywhere. However, my husband does. He has to drive from near Liberty to downtown around noon, and comes home around 9:30. Gary, I know you talk about the wind and the possible hazardous driving, but it seems you are talking more about late afternoon and the evening rush.
Based on what you currently know, do you think he should be okay for his ride to work? And do you think the snow will be done and gone, and the roads decent enough by the time he comes home this evening?

My daughter will be very excited once the snow starts coming down...it's a great birthday present for a three year old!!

In looking at the radar loop, my analysis is that the heaviest snow accums will fall in Miami, Linn, and Cass counties and points south, which agrees with Gary's snow accumulation map. Whether that 1 inch will fall on the Plaza today remains an open question. It will be a close. Should be fun watching this storm evolve. Gary, do you have a spot to measure snowfall that has minimal influence from drifting snow?

The folks to the southeast of KC who were missed time after time last winter will get to enjoy this one. Of course, KC itself once again will miss the bullseye and just have minor accumulations. KCI will probably have less than half an inch out of this one. I remain confident in my prediction of less than 15 inches of snow at KCI this winter.

Any chance I can get out of WORK early because of snow? That should be the real question!! When I was in school, we sat through an ICE STORM while every other school in the metro was out! This was like 93-94 or so, Raytown South. It was such a big deal that all the TV stations showed up asking the super WHY they would keep us in school on a day like that. Now, kids get out with next to no reason. Granted I want my kids safe, but I think we are a bit overboard these days.

camatz6: Yes the cargo is precious but they send the kids home now days for conditions that are in no way dangerous. As far as the road getting hazardous... It would not be that big a problem if the DoT's around here actually had a clue. In LS they never do anything until the snow has been compacted to ice.

I had to take kids home on a bus during the October Surprise storm a few years back. It was not fun. My bus was sliding all over the road and I was taking things slowly. Buses are not equipped to handle wintry road conditions like a lot of the northern states are. I remember in Alaska going to school with lots of snow on the ground. The school bus had chains on.

I believe that I am going to have a work snow day...I dont drive in this very well so when I see it getting too close for comfort I am going to pick my son up from daycare and go home. I dont see the point in taking the risk of waiting and having my 5 year old in the car and have something happen. If I was by myself it would be different.

On another note, that radar looks like the snow band is big and will be here by 11 (just my opinion). Is all that just very light snow or is this going to be bigger than expected?

The radar is showing lots of snow on it now, but alot of it is so light most likely not even hitting the ground. But it sure looks to me like the band is widening.

Ok now seriously, I have seen other radars that make it look like the snow is getting very close to where I am...like I said earlier, I am really bad at driving in this and I dont want to hurt my son who will be in the car too. NBCs radar looks alot different. Can someone tell me why they look so different so I know what to look for before I decide to leave work?

The main thing about many of the schools in this area of Missouri and Kansas is that there are so many gravel/dirt roads that are treacherous to drive in good conditions. In the City, you have the DoT who is out taking care of your roads, but out here we just have the local farmers who take care of the roads. I know of many busses that went into a ditch last year and do not want to see any of our kids hurt. Granted, I don't like making up the snow days later, I sure enjoy them when they come around.

MY wind station isn't always correct, I have a LaCrosse Tech. WS-2310

LaCrosse said that incorrect winds speeds are due to some electromagnetic something.

Ice pellets are starting to come down on Wornall road, freezing rain also looks to be falling as my windows look glazy. I cant wait for the snow! I love NBC Action News and Gary and I know you guys are the most accurate, but all the other dumb weather stations are saying barally an inch. Steve in Sedalia here again....just wanting to post a few observations. We has about .80 inches of rain overnight. I just went out to dump the rain gauge barefooted and my feet can confirm that the water standing on the ground is really cold. It's 37 degrees and the wind is howling. Just going to sit around and watch this thing unfold today. I'll post more info from the Sedalia area as the storm continues.

113th and cookingham we have sleet and snow blowing almost sideways. THis system got some wicked winds and cold as hell could be near blizzard conditions if this continues with 1-3 inches.

Observations from my chair in front of the window :) starting to snow here near Liberty -- off of 291 and Stark. Not sure if there is any sleet or anything else also mixed in, but I'm definitely seeing the snow blowing.

Have to agree with penguin about the DOT trucks in Lee's Summit...they don't get out until it is too late sometimes.
Snowing like crazy here in LS...(another teacher here, too, by the way!) And a dusting on the playground here already and on the parking lot. We shall see what this storm does!

It is snowing nicely in Liberty. I wonder how long this will go on for? Hours hopefully. As I look at NOAA radar it looks like the bands could train across us for a while. Time will tell.

Started in with sleet, now snowing pretty hard here in Paola.....*sigh*...trying to find the bright side to all this. I have to drive up to the city at 3:15 for an appt. sure hope it's not too treacherous. It is pretty coming down ;).

DPannell.... keep an eye on metro freeways via Scout. Not great, but should give you a good idea of what to expect. If you click and hold on the map, you can move it down 1-35 or 69, but I don't think they have cameras between Paola and south OP. Good luck and be careful!
